Description
• Primary Use: Treatment and prevention of gout attacks by managing chronic hyperuricemia (high uric acid levels).
• Dosage & Administration: The usual starting dose is 40 mg once daily, taken orally with or without food. The dosage may be increased to 80 mg after two weeks if the serum uric acid level is still above 6 mg/dL.
• Action: It helps prevent the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints and kidneys, which cause the pain and swelling associated with gout flares. It is not a painkiller for acute gout attacks.
• Important Note: Gout flares may actually increase during the first few months of treatment. A doctor may prescribe another medication, such as colchicine or an NSAID, concurrently to prevent these initial flares.
Gout is caused by too much uric acid in your body. When the level becomes too high, crystals may form in and around certain joints and your kidneys. This can cause sudden and severe pain, redness, warmth, and swelling. This medicine works by preventing crystals from forming and reducing the levels of uric acid in your blood. This makes it less likely that you will suffer the symptoms and make them milder if you do have them. It is usually for long-term treatment and should be taken regularly until the dose is completed.
